Week Two, Day One

Sunday ...
Three of the five of us (Kevin, Emily,
and myself) meet up in New Orleans airport and begin what SHOULD be a really easy (but fairly long) drive to pick up the other two (JJ and Bruce ) at the Gulfport airport before we arrive at our camp... except the Saints played at home (and won-- again!!!) and we managed to catch EVERY part of the traffic. We wind up staring at the Jefferson County Water Tower in New Orleans for over an hour, having moved less than 1 exit on the freeway. I call Michael G. from AFH, who very kindly agrees to pick up JJ and Bruce and we all meet up around 8:00pm at our "camp".

The team (representing San Rafael, Novi, and San Francisco) seems excited to get to work and I do my best to explain what I *think* will happen tomorrow but the weather may have other plans for us. I notice a large stack of hotel supplies in the corner and realize that Carolyn (a member of the team that helps organize these trips) and her hotel contact absolutely came through, which is awesome. None of the volunteer groups likes spending money on things that they may need-- that's not why they're here.

Lights out around 10pm-- and I notice that I'm not awake because of what we may do tomorrow ... I'm awake because of what we GET to do tomorrow. Quite a difference from last time.
